Palace Marienthal

Built in the 16th century as a little hunting palace of the Dukes of Meiningen, the Schweina Palace Marienthal accommodated from 1850 on the educationalist Friedrich Fröbel. Here, Fröbel founded the first educational institution for kindergarteners worldwide. At the same time an orphanage, a kindergarten and a school were to be built. These facilities were supposed to serve the kindergarteners-to-be as a training place. However, only the Kindergarten and a little seminar could be realised. Due to an unfortunate confusion, a ban was imposed on kindergartens in the Kingdom of Prussia in August 1851. Fröbel died in Marienthal in the following year.

A visit to the palace is currently not possible.
