Creuzburg

Creuzburg

Picturesquely, the old city of Creuzburg is located at the edge of the wild and romantic gap through the valley of the Werra. Already in 724, Boniface is said to have done missionary work and set up a cross on the castle hill. The history of city and castle is very closely connected to the Thuringian landgraves, who had their headquarters on the Wartburg, a couple of kilometres away. The Creuzburg was the preferred residence of that landgrave Elisabeth who later became world famous. Michael Praetorius (1572 bis 1621) – a major musician of the early Baroque – was born in Creuzburg. The creator of „Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen“ and many an important work of the evangelical church music, is dedicated an exhibition in the Creuzburg.
