It could have been taken from a picture-book of medieval castles: The Creuzburg, located above the beautiful Werra valley. Its heyday saw festivals under the rule of the Thuringian landgraves. Here, Holy Elisabeth gave birth to her son Hermann. Famous personalities like Goethe und Napoleon were guests here. Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon stopped here on their way to Marburg in 1529.
Nowadays, the impressing and lovingly refurbished castle complex has a Hotel-Restaurant, a museum of town- and castle history, an exhibition on life and work of the church-musician Michael Praetorius, as well as changing special exhibitions, a pottery and a charming castle garden. A big medieval festival takes place in the castle court at Whitsun every year.
