Bad Salzungen

Bad Salzungen lies between the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön in the recreational Werra valley. The city owes its name to the Celtic tribes that lived here around 2,500 years ago. Even in those days the Celts appreciated the preciousness of the salt. A trade arose with the precious rock. Nowadays, the natural brine sources are variously applied mostly in medical and curative purposes. Not only the natural brine sources and the historical Celtic finds, but also the romantic Burgsee (castle lake) located amidst the spa and the many historical sights lend Bad Salzungen its distinctive charm.
