Palace and Park Altenstein

Where once Boniface preached Christianity, the Duke of Saxony-Meiningen had a former castle building constructed according to English models in 1888 which is unique in Thuringia. Today, the surrounding castle park ranks among the most significant garden architectures in Germany and offers beautiful views over the Werratal and the Rhön. Famous names, such as Hermann Fürst Pückler, Eduard Petzold and Peter Joseph Lenné, are connected with the romantic landscape garden.

Despite considerable losses due to a fire in the building in 1982, Schloss Altenstein has remained an architectural masterpiece.
